Open Commenting

by Chris Sunami

After performances during Open Mic week, the audience is invited to offer comments on up to three of the acts they watched that evening. Positive feedback and constructive criticism motivate people to continue performing and to improve as performers.
  1. Commenting Policy

Audience members and judges should follow this policy when making comments:

    1. Strive for a mixture of positive reinforcement for things done well and constructive criticism for things that could improve. Offer more positives for performers who are younger, less confident or newer, and more criticism for performers who are more advanced.
    2. Be specific and detailed, avoid vague comments such as “I liked it”.
Keep in mind these areas (The best art contains a balance of these qualities.):

      • Craft/Skill – Was the performer prepared? Was he or she on pitch? In rhythm? Did he/she have the words memorized correctly? Did he/she handle difficult material with confidence and skill?
      • Originality/Creativity – Was the performance original? Was it creative? Did it feel “fresh”? Was it interesting or exciting? Did it have any surprises? Did it express the performer's personality?
      • Artistry – Did it seem heartfelt? Was it believable? Was it emotionally moving? Was it truthful? Was it meaningful? Did it have depth? Did it have spirituality?
