Amiko Hirao

Amiko Hirao was born and raised in Japan, and completed a degree in art history before coming to the U.S. and graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design.



Hirao grew up traveling back and forth between New York and Kamakura, an ancient capital in Japan sprinkled with Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. This dramatic contrast has had a big visual influence on her. But more than anything she thinks her experience struggling with language really made her appreciate pictures that told stories without words. She thinks this is why she has always been drawn to picture books, and why when she illustrates them, she always makes sure to include speechless sublots throughout -- always keeping in mind that one confused and lost kid in the group that might not be following the actual story.

Amiko has just completed her third children's book, "Tulip at the Bat" from Little, Brown (written by J. Patrick Lewis) and is currently working on her fourth. She resides in Brooklyn, New York.
In addition to How The Fisherman Tricked The Genie her other books include Mary Lyn Ray's "All Aboard."
