Poetry:

A Dream Upon Waking

by Chris Sunami

In the hours before I wrote this
I slumbered on the sofa
sleeping off an early morning
after a too-late night

And you haunted all of my dreams
we were working a place like camp
with many more kids and water slides
like at an amusement park

You were idealized, but distant
as you read the children a story
and I watched from a fabulous distance
from the top of a water slide

You were working in the gift shop
and you gave to me a present
from behind a jumble of items
on a counter made from glass

A shampoo made from flowers
a violet colored soap
the strong sweet smell was in my nose
in the moment in which I awoke
