Hero For Christ ![]() Barack Obama | RJD2![]() I was sitting in Jackie Calderone's office at the Capacity Community Youth Arts Center (here on the Near East side of Columbus) when she mentioned that my one-time classmate "RJ" had become an avant-guard DJ. I filed the the information in the dusty recesses of my mind, and had already forgotten it a few weeks later when I heard some exciting sounds coming over the speakers at Used Kids' Records on High Street. Used Kids' is the best record store in the world, even after burning down once --it's kind of like that store from "High Fidelity" --and I've heard a lot of great stuff for the first time on their sound system. It wasn't until I had bought the CD and listened to it a couple of times that I realized that the producer was none other than R.J. Krone himself, A.K.A. "RJD2". Quite a shock to realize the new artist on your playlist is a kid you last saw when you were eight -- back in the eighties! Anyway, if I haven't mentioned it yet, RJD2's "Deadringer" is a terrific album, and it's not just the guys at UKR that think so. RJD2 is a leading "underground hip hop" DJ on the Def Jux label. He has received rave reviews, as a producer, as a hip-hop instrumentalist, and as one half of the MC-and-a-DJ combo "Soul Position" (together with Columbus artist "Blueprint"). Official Site |
