Blessings and Woes



“The Beatitudes” - Matthew 5:3-10

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are they which hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.

Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.



Luke 6:20-21

Blessed are you poor, for yours is the kingdom of God

Blessed are you that hunger now, for you shall be filled.

Blessed are you that weep now, for you shall laugh.



Matthew 5:11-12 (Luke 6:22-23)

Blessed are you, when men revile you, and cast you out, and persecute you, and falsely accuse you of all manner of evil for my sake.

Rejoice, and leap for joy, for great is your reward in heaven, for they persecuted the prophets which were before you in the same manner.



Luke 6:24-26

But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.

Woe to you that are full, for you shall hunger.

Woe to you that laugh, for you shall mourn and weep.

Woe to you, when all men speak well of you, for so did their fathers to the false prophets.



Luke 11:42-44

Woe unto you, religious leaders! For you give the temple mint and rue and all manner of herbs, but neglect judgment and the love of God. You should have done the latter and the former as well. Woe to you, religious leaders! For you love the uppermost seats in the temple, and greetings in the markets. Woe unto you, scholars and religious leaders, hypocrites! For you are like graves which are hidden, and men walk over them unawares.



Matthew 23:13 (Luke 11:52)

Woe to you, scholars and religious leaders, hypocrites! You have shut the door of the kingdom of heaven. You neither go in yourselves, nor let others pass.
